i don't know what my mother was thinking when she picked the name taryn.
when my mother was in high school [circa 1978-80], there was a soap opera with a character named taryn blake. so there the choice was made, her first daughter would be named taryn.
[in high school, i seriously thought of changing my middle name from ann to blake. i thought it'd be cool, but a) it costs $100 and b) 'taryn blake katter' doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely as 'taryn ann katter']
cut to my elementary school days. i hated my name. and to add insult to injury, every time i passed a kiosk of personalized keychains, picture frames, backpacks, bicycle plates, etc. my name was never to be found after 'tara'.
in middle school, i was online shopping at my favorite store back then delias.com and i came across a pair of knock-off dr. marten boots called the taryn boot. i had to have them. granted, they were a grayish-white with blue, black and silver paint splattered all over them, but they belonged in my closet because we shared our name. i bought them and immediately sent them back. they were ugly and should not have been named my name.
i've come to terms with the fact that i have a very unique first and last name. i will forever have to spell my first name and if i get married, it'll probably be to someone who has just as an unusual surname that i have now and i'll have to keep spelling everything out.
but i still get giddy when i see an article of clothing that has my moniker.
like this gorgey dress from j.crew. she'll be mine in a heartbeat when she goes on sale.
